A faster way for Indian students to get their Canadian visa.
What is Student Direct Stream (SDS)?
Indian students applying to universities and colleges in Canada can now expect faster visa processing through the Study Direct Stream (SDS) program launched by the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada. Unlike the usual visa processing that may take up to 2-3 months, SDS allows students from India to avail their visa in 4-6 weeks. When a student who meets the eligibility criteria applies via SDS, most applications are processed within 20 calendar days.
A replacement to the erstwhile SPP program, SDS has more stringent rules and regulations to fulfill. However, it can be extremely beneficial for those who meet the criteria as it provides easy visa processing for SDS entitled DLI institutions and requires less financial documentation.
Before we move ahead, you’d need to understand a little about the Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) and Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).
What is a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)?
A designated learning institution or DLI is a university, school or college approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. All public universities, colleges and major private universities and colleges in Canada are DLI. So, if you’re applying for a study permit, you are required to have a letter of acceptance letter from a DLI.
You should know that international students can only be recruited by a DLI; a non-DLI is not permitted to admit international students.
Note: DLI doesn’t entitle automatic eligibility for post-study work permit.
What is Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC)?
A GIC is a Canadian investment that has a guaranteed rate of return for a fixed period of time.
In simple words, as an Indian student wanting to study in Canada, you’ll be required to open a Canadian bank account online with any one of the designated banks. Once your account is created, the bank holds your GIC in a student account or an investment account that you’ll be able to access only when you arrive in Canada. It releases your funds only upon the confirmation of your identity when arrive in the country. While you can take an initial lump sum amount on arrival, the remaining is distributed monthly or bi-monthly over a period of 10-12 months.
Remember, the bank from which you purchase your GIC must provide you with any of the following:
The IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) verifies every GIC, eliminating the possibility of any kind of financial document related fraud. No other financial document is required under SDS to prove to the IRCC that the student has sufficient funds to support their tuition fee and living expenses.
Banks that offer GIC in India.
What is the eligibility criteria for SDS?
To be able to apply for a study permit via SDS, certified conditions are required to be fulfilled:
If you meet the criteria, then submit the following documents:
All applications for SDS are submitted online.
The study permit is a document issued, that allows foreign nationals to study at designated learning institutions (DLI) in Canada. With the launch of the Student Direct Stream (SDS) by the Canada, international students can get student’s visa under this accelerated process when they take admission in DLI. In Canada, all educational institutionswhich are permitted to admit international students, are DLI.
To qualify for Study Permit Application under SDS, you must:
The Canadian High Commission provides all visa applicants an efficient, transparent, and standardized application process which simplify application submission and fee payment in India.Visa Interview is not mandatory for Study Permit applications, but if required the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada may ask you to attend an interview at the Visa Office – Delhi / Bangalore / Chandigarh.Once the Visa Office has assessed your application they will make a decision and affix a visa counterfoil in your passport.
You may deposit your application at the Canada Visa Application Centre (CVAC), India operated by VFS Global Services Pvt. Ltd. Once you deposit your application at the Visa Application Centre, the VAC staff will perform a complete check based on IRCC requirements and will then submit your application on your behalf on the following business day. Applications may also be submitted to Canadian Immigration and Citizenship by using online application system of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)’s website at www.cic.gc.ca

Each year, nearly 300,000 foreign workers come to work in Canada on Temporary Work Permits. With its record low unemployment rate, Canada, today more than ever, must rely on foreign talent to continue to grow a strong national workforce.
Work Opportunities
Studying UG/ PG:
While studying UG or PG in Canada, international students are allowed to work part time for 20 hours a week during term time and 40 hours i.e. full time during vacations.
Co-op internship:
Many of the institutions in Canada offer paid internships as part of the course where the students get the opportunity to work full time in industry relating to their area of study. Some programs in Canada like co-op do include work experience as part of their curriculum. You need to apply for a work permit only if your acceptance letter confirms that a co-op or internship placement is part of your program’s curriculum. In such a case the work permit will be processed as part of the application and the student will be issued SW-1 visa.S-1 stands for Study Visa and SW-1 visa is for Study and Work visa or study permit with work permit. Students who have a compulsory co-op in their program are supposed to be issued SW-1 visa.
Spouse & Minor Children:
Canada’s generous immigration policy allows the spouse and minor children of international students studying full time UG or PG courses to accompany them to Canada to work and study. In this way, a student’s entire close family can benefit from a Canadian experience. The spouse is allowed to work under an open work permit for any employer in Canada, and does not require a Labour Market Opinion or job offer as stipulated under LMIA (explained later). Your minor children do not require a study permit to attend school at the pre-school, primary, or secondary levels. However, once the child reaches the age of majority, he or she must apply for a study permit to continue studies in Canada.
In Canada, International students upon completing their post-secondary education in Canada may apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit(PGWP), in order to gain Canadian work experience. The PGWP allows eligible international graduates to work in Canada after their studies for a period of up to three years.
Normally a work permit visa is granted for one year on a study of one year. For a study of at least 2 or more years the student can get post study work visa for up to 3 years. The Government of Canada provides the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program as part of its efforts to attract international students and retain them as skilled workers. The program provides an open work permit, which allows international graduates to work for any Canadian employer in any industry without the requirement of a Canadian job offer at the time of applying.International students can only receive one Post-Graduation Work Permit from IRCC. The work experience gained through the PGWPP will help you garner valuable points to qualify for permanent residency in Canada. The permanent resident visa is determined on a point based system.
To be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit, international students must have:
Category ineligible for PGWP:
Certain categories of students pursuing courses like self-improvement courses, distance learning programs received funding or participated in the Government of Canada Awards Program, are ineligible for work permits. There are a few special cases where international students may be eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit if they have completed an accelerated or distance learning program or requested a leave from studies.
Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP)
The pilot was created to connect foreign workers with Canadian employers from communities facing labour shortages. The following communities are now accepting applications through the pilot:
A candidate must first meet federal eligibility requirements. a Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) of level five or higher in English or French. Candidates are given a score based on human capital factors. The system includes in its scoring grid the candidate’s potential to integrate and stay in the community.
Prospective can receive up to 100 points for factors such as age, and language as well as their connection to the community. Having previously worked, studied, or bought property in the community will help improve a candidate’s score. Candidates can get points for having travelled to the community, for having a Canadian driver’s license or permit, and for having family connections in the area. The wage of the candidate’s job offer may also have an effect on their score.Candidates applying from abroad must complete a 15 to 30-minute interview via video conference. Those who are currently in the community may need to attend an in-person interview, at the committee’s discretion.
LMIA:
In most cases, to work in Canada, a foreign national requires a work permit.Generally, Canadian employers wishing to employ a foreign worker in Canada must first obtain authorization from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC), otherwise known as a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). Canadian employers must demonstrate that employing a foreign worker will not have a negative impact on the Canadian labour market and that there is currently no Canadian citizen or permanent resident available to fill the position. This is typically accomplished by advertising the position on several venues, thus demonstrating there was no suitable Canadian for the job.
Step 1: Employer applies for Labour Market Impact Assessment.
Step 2: Employer extends Temporary Job Offer.
Step 3: Once a positive or neutral LMIA is granted, Foreign Worker applies for Work Permit.
Step 4: Work Permit is issued.
Apart from the situations outlined below in this section, Canadian visa officers have a degree of flexibility in assessing whether the issuance of a work permit to a foreign national is desirable without the need for a LMIA to be secured. This is known as significant social or cultural benefit, based on the following:
Objective measures for “significant social or cultural benefit”:

Choosing a program and an institution solely depends on your interests, academic background, and budget. To decide where to study and what to pursue, you can start by creating a list of your interests and skills and spend some time reflecting upon it. Do your research to understand which skillset or interest has a good scope professionally. Narrow down your choices accordingly and search for relevant courses and institutions.
Pursuing masters in Canada can be one of the best decisions of your life since it’ll not only enhance your technical skills but also give your CV an edge over others. As an Indian student with an undergrad degree, you should be ideally looking for an institution that emphasizes on practical knowledge, hands-on experience and getting you job-ready. Canadian universities and colleges provide a research-based learning approach wherein you’ll be implementing all the concepts and ideas you gather in the classroom.Begin by taking a look at the subjects you learnt in your undergrad program, list down the ones that interest you. Narrow down to your preferred niche and search for possible programs and universities. Applying to Canadian universities and colleges would also require you to take language and/or aptitude tests. So, do consider your academic scores while deciding what and where to study. Look for the intake offered for your preferred courses and prepare accordingly.
Education in Canada is generally funded and managed by the Provincial Governments of Canada. Admission requirements vary from one institution to another, but common pre-requites are:
Programs | Entry Requirements |
Masters | 16 Years (10+2+4) of full-time education. 65% and above in Bachelors |
PG Diploma | 15 Years (10+2+3) of full-time education. 50-55% and above in Bachelors |
Bachelors | 12 Years of full-time education. 60% and above in grade 12 |
UG Diploma | 12 Years of full-time education. 50-55% and above in grade 12 |
Yes, 10+2+3 system is accepted for post graduate (PG) diploma programs. However, for masters, almost all universities require 10+2+4. However, certain universities may accept 10+2+3 for masters in selected programs on a case-to-case basis.
If you are under 18, you need to submit a custodian (local guardian) letter in your visa application along with the rest of your documents.
Unlike a single intake in Indian universities, Canadian colleges and universities offer three intakes. Intakes may also be referred to as a semester in some institutions. Here’s an overview of the intakes available for different programs in universities and colleges:
Program | Intake | Deadline |
Undergraduate and Postgraduate in aUniversity | Fall (September) | December – March |
Winter (January) | September – November
Diploma programs in Colleges | Fall (August/September) | February – April |
Winter (January) | August – September
Summer (May) – Available for limited programs | January – February |
Consider factors like the availability of your preferred program, your academic records, entrance test scores, acceptance rates, job opportunities and your readiness to join the program. While most Indian students prefer the September intake, January and April intakes are equally good for certain programs. We suggest, if you do not have your score cards ready, it’s better to skip the haste and apply for the next intake. In order to make a well-informed decision, you can book a free counselling session with our experienced counsellors who can advise you on available intakes, course selection, application submission, and visa procedure.
